If you missed this film when it was released to theatres, as we did, right the wrong now it’s on dvd. Like in his first feature, Brick, Rian Johnson layers older forms of storytelling over a present that’s not quite contemporary. The effect here is like a cartoon populated with human actors, in that it’s dazzling, captivating, and endlessly amusing—without neglecting the seriousness of the genres it’s playing with.
